There are a lot of ways to show affection on a big day or treat your partner to something special, but one of the easiest is breakfast in bed. Luckily, you don’t have to stay at a luxury hotel or be a professional chef to make breakfast in bed elegant, enjoyable, and mess-free.
And while there are certainly a lot of options, you don’t have to go this far to make it an appreciated and memorable gesture or a nice way to spend a weekend morning.

Plan ahead of time
Breakfast in bed can be … tricky. Breakfast foods can be some of the messiest to cook and eat and odds are you’ll want the gesture to come as a surprise.
Planning can make the preparation easier and reduce the risk of spoiling the surprise. Of course, it’s important to make sure you’re selecting a dish the recipient enjoys but try to stick to meals you have experience preparing. Breakfast in bed is one of the rare cases where quality goes further than quantity.
Select containers carefully
Sheets aren’t cheap and mattresses are often a bank-breaking purchase. The last thing you need ruining your big surprise is a mimosa seeping into your memory foam mattress.
To avoid the risk of syrup-soaked sheets, it’s important to make sensible choices for your dishes and drinks. An easy way to steer clear of a mess is to keep drinks in sealable containers. A simple, but aesthetically pleasing way to go is mason jars. Their rustic look completes the elegance but also serves a practical purpose.
Keep dishes light
Waffles and pancakes can be a tempting choice when it comes to breakfast in bed, but they also come with an increased risk of mess. They also typically mean a big mess will be left behind after you finish cooking.
Instead of syrupy messy pancakes, pair your proteins with something simply. Toast, croissants, and biscuits are all great options that reduce the risk of catastrophic spills and messes on your mattress. Fruits are another simple, safe option that will pair nicely with your main course.
Ditch the streaming services
If you’re doing breakfast in bed for a partner, nothing can ruin it faster than spending the whole time binging Netflix. While it is certainty OK if you’re going for a more casual breakfast in bed. If you’re shooting for a grand romantic gesture, try replacing the TV or laptop with music or even conversation.
If you do opt for TV or a movie, pick something they like. Giving your breakfast in bed recipient time to watch their favorite movie while also being treated to a romantic gesture can add another level of attention to detail they will likely appreciate.
Invest in a tray table
Sitting in bed trying to manage several plates, bowls, and glasses is not the way to go about this. If you really want to do breakfast in bed right, it’s worth purchasing tray tables.
A tray table will make the experience more manageable and add a level of luxury to the experience that makes your partner feel like they’re being treated at a five-star hotel. It’s also a surfier way to reduce the chance of a mess. Plus, next time someone in your house is sick it will make treating them to a meal in bed a painless process.
Accidents happen
If you follow all these steps and still find yourself with coffee stains on your mattress at the end of the morning, don’t stress it. Getting spills out of a mattress is a much easier process than you may think.
For any spilled drinks simply follow these steps:
Cover soiled liquid with a towel to absorb any liquid
Spray the area with a stain remover, preferably one with fabric-safe bleach
Let the stain remover sit for at least 15 minutes
Damped a sponge and rub it over the stain and then blot the stain with paper towels
If the stain is still visible, repeat steps 2 through 4
Use a clean towel to dry the area and turn on a ceiling fan or open a window and let the mattress dry out.
